Welcome to Edinburgh Swing Dance Society

Classes, Workshops and Events in

Lindy Hop

We pride ourselves on our fun and friendly atmosphere, and we love introducing people to the world of Lindy Hop and our dance community.

A little about us...

As an informal society of dancers our mission is to create and maintain a fun and friendly dance community, where we welcome new people to the wonderful world of Lindy Hop and Swing Dance. We run classes, workshops and events, and promote social swing dancing in Scotland.

What is Lindy Hop?

Lindy Hop is a partnered dance born out of Harlem, New York by African-American dancers from the late 1920's through to the 1940's.

It was traditionally danced to Big Band Jazz music and evolved from dances such as the Charleston, tap dance and the breakaway.

Dance Levels

Level 1: Fundamentals

You have no experience of dancing Lindy hop, or you have experience and want to sharpen your technique.

Level 2: Technique & Core Moves

You have been attending weekly classes regularly for 2 or 3 terms, are comfortable with 8 and 6 count footwork and regularly social dance.

Level 3: Advanced Styling & Improvisation*

You have been dancing regularly for a least a year, have attended workshops, performed choreography routines, or entered open comps.

*We are not currently running regular classes at this level.

We have three dance levels we use for our classes, workshops and events - catering for all levels of dancers.

Our 'Fundamentals' class is designed for absolute beginners, with a new term starting every 6 weeks. This class is also great for experienced dancers looking to sharpen their basics!

Beginners can start our 'Fundamentals' class in either of the first 2 weeks of a term.

You do not need to come along with a partner, Lindy Hop is a social dance and we will rotate partners in our classes.

Bookings are now open for our 20th August workshop with Charlie DecaVita: 1920s Charleston. More information on our Events page.
