LEVEL DESCRIPTIONS

​​At ESDS, we teach at a number of different levels to accommodate dancers at every stage in their practice. We recommend attending classes at a level that will challenge you without overwhelming you.​

We don't require dancers to audition for our higher levels. Should you have any questions about the most suitable level for you, email us at info@esds.org.uk.

Level 1: Fundamentals

​​

If you’re brand new to partner dancing, swing dancing or Lindy Hop, this is the level for you. No previous experience is necessary to attend any of our Level 1 classes. We’ll take you through the basic steps, rhythms, moves and techniques. After a few terms of Level 1, you'll be a confident social dancer.

Level 2: Technique and Core Moves

​

Once you’ve completed a minimum of two full terms of Level 1 and are comfortable dancing socially, or have gained similar experience in another dance scene, we’d love you to join us for Level 2 classes. In Level 2, we'll expand your repertoire and technique and improve your connection with both the music and your dance partner.

Level 3: Advanced Styling and Improvisation​

​

If you've been dancing for many years, Level 3 is for you! To dance at this level, you should have the experience, versatility and skills to dance with anyone at most tempos.

​

You should come to this class at the point in your dancing when you feel confident in dancing the following socially: Swing out / Lindy Turn / Lindy Circle / Texas Tommy / Basic Jazz Steps / Mixing 6-count and 8-count / Tandem Charleston / Musicality at the level of whole phrases.

 

In this level, you'll attempt more challenging variations, add to the moves you know, and work on momentum, lead/follow connection, rhythm variations, musicality and improvisation.

Equivalences

​

Our teachers will adapt their lessons to the specific people in the class, so our Levels don't map directly onto terms used by other dance groups and events. That said, generally Level 1 maps onto Beginners/Improvers, Level 2 to Improvers/Intermediate and Level 3 to Intermediate/Advanced.
